April 2010 Update - Effects, Effects, Effects.

Historically, a lack of updates from the Dystopia team either means there is a lack of tangible progress or that we are sitting on something waiting to show it. Thankfully, for the April 2010 update, the latter is the case. The programmers have been hard at work making some great effects and squashing bugs that would otherwise plague our eventual release to
supporters.
If you're a fan of
Dystopia on Facebook, you'll see that we gave everyone a sneak peek of a new effect that has been completed for Dystopia 1.3. The new effect is a particle implementation to replace the current Tesla's secondary fire, which is a little more visible and visually appealing.
Also, this past week we have given a sneak peek of the new Green Ice effect to
supporters. The purpose of this effect, other than giving a graphical upgrade to the shader that is currently used, is to offer a distinct difference between being jacked-out due to an EMP and jacked-out due to Green Ice. When a player is forced out of a JIP due to an EMP grenade, the normal embossed screen effect will play. Otherwise, being jacked-out due to hitting a Green Ice wall will cause this beautiful effect!
Finally, this month's effect-themed-update would not be complete without something not yet shown to the public! The Stealth effect used in 1.2 has been given a visual reboot for the next version. It has been the victim of replacement time and time again, each time using a pre-made effect from Half-Life 2. We hope that this upgrade gives some more aesthetic to the effect as well as giving a slight buff to the Implant.
Fans on Facebook may have also heard that
Fedio recently joined the development team as a tryout developer. He has been working hard, making great strides upgrading his popular map,
Fusion. We hope that his progress continues and that we can welcome him aboard the team soon, with some great shots of the new version of Fusion.
Also, since the last time we've had an update, a programming tryout of ours has joined the
team.
Arvind, a very talented programmer, has been brought up from a successful tryout period. He has already broken new ground, and helped solve a lot of the remaining Orange Box bugs preventing 1.3 from releasing. Please take some time welcoming him as well as our new programming tryout
Wintermute to the team, and expect to see great progress made from both of them!
Stay tuned for the next update, when we show off the final goodies for 1.3 and announce a date to release for Supporter testing!

That's all good and everything, but how does it look in DX8?

im guessing the effects will look bland or slightly strange in dx8, but it should be ok, and also that stealth will be completely invisible to any supported dx level, probably dx7+.
just a guess.

I wish the stealth transition lasted longer since it looks so sexy
is it the same thing for flickers or just the old effect?

I'm sure everyone noticed that after reading the change-log.
- Fix for weapons that have hit-beeps that occur at the same time (Basilisk, Shotgun, Mini-gun) not stacking to make a deeper sound for higher damage that is inflicted. (Issue #2025, #988)

great news!
I'm looking forward to see a new official map added to the map-pool. I'm also happy to see that the dys team seems to get larger with every new version, so hopefully 1.3 won't be the last version released for this game.

Yes, the old flickering effect is gone. Also, the effect is still there while the stealther is moving but it is very light.

Awesome new effects, very professional looking.
Stealth buff is gonna make it even harder for me to move away from the classic bolt light loadout. I wonder if TAC scans will become a rarer as thermals will become more necessary.
Welcome to the team new programmer dudes!

From main page: "Posted on 06/04/2010 at 06:18"
From this thread: "Wed Apr 07, 2010 1:18 am"
Why they do not match?
Will the hitbeeps just stack for guns that shoot multiple shots at the same time?
Or will there be a pitch scaling thing the user can set? Like in TF2.
That gave me an idea for a crappy suggestion:

Does the transition to orange box have any implications for mapping?
such as more texture in the orange box SDK base?
also how does steam "update" the game to the new version, does it only write changes to the existing GCF or totaly re-download the new one, and is the gcf somehow tied to user account?

I'm loving that new stealth effect
also i know you guys are just busy getting the bugs ironed out and probably don't have time but are you changing any of the maps, layout wise? IMO most of the maps are perfect but could use a few tweaks ala Silo and some just need a little reworking to be perfect (exodus/injection). I didn't see anything about the maps in the changelog so im assuming not?
I like that fusion might be getting upgrade, one of the better third party maps imo, I suggested fedio upgrade it in irc a few months back, coincidence or not that is great news
now we just need that guy who made tower to tweak his map into something more refined (but keep the dance pad)

yeh but nobody knows where icepick is, also i think for a map to be included in the game, the creator must be a dev to avoid some....issues?
anyway, there is no need to have so many maps officialy included, just an easy to download map pack, you can even link a 3rd party pack through the game or even through steam?
can extra stuff be a free DLC, can mods have DLCs?

Pretty cool them effects, innit ?
And yeah, DLC is Downloadable content, so pretty much any game/mod can have them. Judging by it's definition, even Microsoft Office can have DLC.

well i meant through steam?
as then its probably more likely that people will download it, being in an easy to find location, and always up to date.
then maybe phistball and some 3rd party maps can be a DLC through steam if it would be better than the current way?

yeah that would be really awsome if a mod offers free dlc's

This game is getting better and better.
I mean come on, for a "mod" this is just insane. This is all thanks to the amazing work of the dev team.
I know the whole " thank you devs " can sound old, and trust me - I do not like to lick balls, I'm just astonished.
