My dad works for IBM and worked on both the XBox 360 and the PS3 (that's the "PowerPC" part). It's pretty interesting to hear what he's allowed to say about each of the projects. Sadly, he didn't tell me much more than what is publicly availible, but since I don't have to look for the info, it's kinda nice.
I'm going for the XBox 360 and the Revolution myself... I've never really gotten into the whole PS gaming world. Good machines though, just not my kind of games (for the most part).
Edit: side note... looks like that was published in May... there have been a few changes since then.

I think one of the amusing situations coming out of this year's console war is that they could literally make or break each other. It's no longer feasable to keep multiple high performace consoles on the market. Though it's better for the consumer, it's not something the companies can maintain. Revolution is lucky in the respect that it's found a niche group of consumers so that it might survive regardless of the competition, but the PS3 and 360 are directly competing for the same audience (with slight difference obviously, such as Sony's strong backbone with anime fans).
To me it looks like the PS3 will win out simply because the 360 is still using DVD9s and many software vendors have voiced their concerns that the storage capacity is too low. And since what often turns the tide of a console war is software and blockbuster titles, that puts the PS3 in the lead, especially with MGS4 coming out with it. By contrast, the 360 lacks any definitively exceptional titles other than Halo 3, whose fan base was significantly hit by the disappointments in Halo 2 (God the rendering problems in that game were horrendous).
It's still a toss up, but anything can turn the tide at this point. The rumors of the PS3 overheating are an example. If true, it could severely hurt the console and put the competitor in the lead. Only time will tell.

I am never f*cking buying another Sony product again after the abominations that were the PS2, the PSP and everything Sony Online Enterainment makes (DAMN them for screwing up the best MMOG ever, PlanetSide, with Core Combat). Especially not when they
pull this stupid crap.

You think that's bad? Have you heard what they've done to it RECENTLY?
1) Upped the monthly fee to fund new content.
2) Made this new content have restrictions on it, like in order to use a new bomber, you have to have flown in the regular bomber for X-hundred hours and gotten 6,000 kills. Or my favorite, the one you had to play for two years to use.

PS3 and Revolution for me, The 360 dosen't have anything that particularly appeals to me.
The Blu-ray and 1080p support for the PS3 are the biggest selling points for me as is the ablity to play all the old Nintendo games on the Revolution.

Just because a company holds a patent doesn't mean dick. Sony also holds a patent for using a band of electrodes to input data directly into the user's senses non-invasively. Yet somehow, I don't see that being a PS3 accessory.
For all you know, they could've patented it so another company would't (yes, shit like that happens all the time). If they announce it, I'll be as angry as you, but conjecture just because of a patent is a waste of time and energy.

Really, this is, I believe, just bogus. Because of Sony Music's DRM shit they pulled a month or so ago people have begun to post crap like this all over the net. I mean seriously, not allowing rented/borrowed games? You really believe that? I mean, fucking really? Even for a giant such as Sony they realize the benefits of lborrowing games from friends/renting. It's free merchandise or what the hell you want to call it!

I got news, patents don't last forever, they run out. Then any company can make a similar product.

PS3 and possibly a revolution so I'm not called a hypocrit round every corner.
I might get a 360 if it ever sells for £100 mind you.

Not sure... probably none if I keep the same mindset I've had for the past year or so. But ps3 should be pretty obviously better than the other two hardware/game wise. Playstation hasn't failed since it was born whereas Nintendo has been on fucking drugs and Microsoft made some really bad moves with the still-an-infant xbox.
I've also played the 360 in walmart and I CANNOT see what the hype is. It looks goddamn terrible to me. Yes, new games not optimized for the hardware, but it still looks much worse than I was led to believe. Like, why the hell is everyone raving about CoD2 on it so much? It looks *TERRIBLE*.
Revolution I can only see either bombing terrily or actually being pretty good, depends on how they and 3rdparty game devs use the controller I guess. But it doesn't look good at all for ports, which may hurt it quite a bit (even though console companies seem to be striving to get away from multi-platform ports these days, for obvious reasons).
Oh, and playstation Sony has nothing to do with SOE, makers of planetside, sorry to tell you. You're dumb if you're gonna boycott Sony products because of what a branch of their company made/did. That'd be like boycotting half-life because a mod for it sucked. "Hey, SOE overtook Verant's Everquest and ruined it, I'm gonna go throw out my PS2 now."

I have never really been a console person, I might get a 360 or ps3 depending if theres anything that really grabs my attention.
I have a bad feeling that Nintendo are going to go the way of Sega in the console market. PSP is overshadowing gameboy and revolution is just a strange looking console. I don't think revolution is going to take off in the western market.

And you're dumb if you're gonna insult people after not reading their damn posts. Yes I know SOE is a division of Sony. I also know that everything Sony has made has consisted of little more recycled cardboard and put up at rediculous prices. The junk they sell is easily jammed and broken, while being difficult if not impossible to replace. Tons of PS2s and PSPs were released already unplayable or became unplayable after only days of use. And I'm not even going to talk about their electronics departments...
When they do work, the company uses underhanded tactics to steal money from the consumer. Sony purposely used proprietary formats for the PSP to take money from the movie industry (UMDs are vastly inferior to DVDs in quality and capacity while costing more to buy). They are forcing firmware patches on PSP owners to stop them from using mods and homebrewed games (when the damn company can't even get proper game support in the first place), dictating how people should use their systems. They release hardware in useless and unnecessary bundles.
And I shouldn't have to remind you about this whole copy-protection mess.

But you can play Katamari Damacy on a Playstation, so Sony wins!

Yes i do know about that because i decided to use their 7-day trial see whats up, but sadly everything i saw was what's down. Way down. Beta rocked, and even after beta it rocked up until that abomination they call Core Combat was released.

And nintendo/microsoft doesn't do the same? If you're gonna whine about corporate bullshit, you'd better just become a hermit because you're gonna find the same crap no matter where you look.
And all I heard from like the 4-5 posts in a row about planetside was "I'm not buying a ps3 because sony killed planetside". Which, like I said, is retarded logic.

I don't think revolution is going to take off in the western market.
See, i think it will due to the free network access, plus the "unlimited" access to games from previous consoles. Americans (from my limited view) seem to love the retro games right now. Also, it's not being marketed directly to the late-teen-early-twenty market like the other 2 consoles. Revo is being marketed to younger generations who didn't get to play those games and so will jump at the opportunity.
I must say that I am a bit biased though as I've owned every Nintendo console except Virtual Boy, SNES, and Gameboy Pocket. I think that we're gonna have to wait till more info is released to hear about the Revo and make our decisions.

I really hope it does do well, I just don't see the market heading that way. Nintendo has always been the family console, but even the little kids now don't want furry animal platform games, they want guns and to run over innocent bystanders when they get in the way of thier criminal activities.
I read alot about the console and a few reviews as well as an interesting article about the philosophy behind the design/controller. It just seems very risky going up against ms and sony with revolution.
I hope I'm wrong but past has shown that there just isn't room for 3 consoles. With the market growth there may be. I'm not sure how succesfull Gamecube was, but I know that Sega got pushed out of the race by sony and I can see the same happening with microsoft and nintendo. (and we all know ms arn't going to fall out of the race).

I was an avid PS2 supporter, but I've been leaning towards the Xbox 360. But I won't buy any of the next gen consoles anyway, I haven't even started up my PS2 in about 8-9 months. I get all my gaming enjoyment out of my PC.

It astounds me how people just want to be spoon fed the same old crap. Nintendo are trying something very different, and its written off as a gimick. Anyone want to tell me what the 360 or the PS3 has that is any different to the previous generation of consoles? Absolutely nothing. No hi-def doesnt count, what do you think a computer monitor is? Its hardly an innovation.
I do have concerns about 3rd party support. I have concerns about the battery life of the controller. I have concerns about how your arms probably going to fall off after 10 minutes of play XD At least its going to be different. Different from the perfectly fine games i can get for my PC right now. Game experiences i cant currently have. Its all about the games people.

I think that the Revolution will do fine everyone that I have talked to is either geting a PS3 or 360 AND a Revolution.
The Revolution isn’t really competing against the other two as far as I can tell and as Lubey said it’s about the games and game play more than graphics. You will sell more systems initially with graphics but game play will win out in the end, and the games are where they make their money anyway not the systems.
Plus I think that Microsoft should be rooting for the Revolution because if it bombs and Nintendo has to get out of the hardware business I don’t really see Nintendo putting any of their VERY lucrative franchises on a Microsoft system which would make the Sony systems by far better than anything that Microsoft could throw out there.
