Dystopia in Wine/Crossover for Mac/Linux (Updated)

Confirmed to work on Linux too. Here's how.
In Wine/Crossover, Steam/Steamworks games cannot be "Purchased." There is a way around this however.

1. First install Crossover Games or Wine, whatever you prefer, and then install Steam.
2. Install Halflife 2 through Steam.
3. Copy "Dystopia Live Content.gcf" to your Steamapps folder. There are several ways to get it. You can:

a. Download it on a PC, then copy it to your Mac/Linux Wine bottle with a flash drive.
b. Do the same using Boot Camp or 3m drivers if you have Windows already installed.
c. Do the same using VirtualBox (with shared folders) or Parallels. I used VBox+Win 7.

5. Start/Restart Steam, then click on Dystopia. It will begin downloading the rest of the necessary files.
6. When it's done, go into the launch options and add "-novid +mat_hdr_level 0" without the quotes.
7. Launch and play the game. Be sure to set shadow detail to low.
8. I recommend running in DX8 in a window, by adding "-dxlevel80 -window" to the launch options.
9. Tweak autoexec.cfg as needed for your hardware.

Everything works perfectly for me. I usually get between 40-200 fps. If anyone else could try this and post bugs/tips/feedback I'd like to help perfect the Mac Dystopia experience. PM me if you need any help, I'll gladly assist.

Proof Much?
Running in a window to show it's on a mac! =D

No Cyberspace bugs yet.

Sweet! Ok I've been playing as "Wine-Test" in servers to see how things work. It's been crashing a lot, I'm still playing with configs to find what works best. I'll update this with configs and specs that work best for me when I'm done.

I have gotten this to work and posted the set-up in the WINE app db:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=15853

If you have it working I'd be glad to see your test data or any bugs submitted - the wine devs work faster this way.

The page includes a detailed description on getting it working thanks to elektrified.

also, @elektrified: 1440x900 windowed seems to work right with the GUI and such, I haven't once gotten a crash yet.

I've found that keeping it in a window helps as well. I'm working on some cfg stuff to make it run a bit nicer. I run it in dxlevel 8.1 with models, textures and such all set to high. I have gotten the occasional crash in cyberspace and emp grenades almost freeze the framerate. Low shader/particle settings help significantly with that.

I have Steam installed on an NTFS partition. Since Steam doesn't NEED regkeys to run properly, I run it in Wine from Linux and it works fine. Additionally, I can download content without a problem and run it fine. Perhaps the download isue is due to being on an ext3 partition?

I'm running it on a latest-gen intel macbook pro on an hfs+ partition in leopard. I think the problem has more to do with the version of wine crossover 7.1.1 uses. The latest version uses a newer version of wine and has better support for the latest steam clients. Steam on older versions of wine couldn't "purchase" games, even steamworks mods, and steamworks mods that were previously downloaded didn't show in the "my games" list, hence the workaround above. This problem may have been fixed in the latest version of Wine, making this tut obsolete.

I tried testing the latest version of wine myself via macports but steam crashed at startup so I stuck to crossover. I haven't yet tested it in ubuntu but i suspect that the problem was just my now old (2 weeks old) wine version or a mac ports bug.

You also can start the game in the other X server in fullscreen mode.

I also have steam on an NTFS partition, but it doesn't work from them. It's only work from native filesystem... But the worst is that my native hdd is just 10 gb all space... There is now only Ubuntu distribute and Steam with Dystopia...

FWIW:
Code: Select all
wine "C:/Program Files/Steam/Steam.exe" -applaunch 17580
will make steam download and install the game without having to dig up a copy of the gcf. It'll also launch the game without having to deal with the main steam window once you've got it installed.
