Creating some kind of traffic through dystopia

Postby FallenPrey » Mon May 27, 2013 5:56 pm

It appears as though we are getting some traffic again (finally) in dystopia, under the Euro server of Pates, however, some is good, but I don't think we have a "stable" enough server to go through for the United States. So here is what I plan on doing...

Getting a new server up and running

I will be getting a new server up and running, based out of Chicago, its only a few bucks per month to get a sturdy 16 man server running, So I am not to worried about actually being able to not afford it. After Sludge went down for good, along with the the League server since Useful Idiot stopped paying/running the server (and Dystopia in general), this is where the majority of problems come into play. There is NO SERVERS out there now, that is stable enough to support traffic. I know we have one under Fire Elemental, but once he starts playing, we get punished by lag, along with Tom Sawyers server... Can't really do everything and anything on there. The server will be locked up for competitive play every day (pugs etc), and I will be stripping it of Underime, since it chases away alot of the newer players, along with Exodus. I love exodus and Undermine, but those two by themselves really kill the popularity of the server.

Any donations toward this to get it running, would be absolutely awesome, since we only need 20 dollars per month to run the server.

Population increase

Before 1.2 to 1.3 release, quite a few players were in-game on a regular basis, and I mean, I would go to sleep, wake up at 8 or so, and a semi-filled server would still be in existence. Now, with so many issues with the server list going down on a regular basis, I will be attempting to get a server going and get it completely populated. I have connections in between quite a few clans, and can post in their "general" forums and we might get more population that way. But, its worth a shot.

I also have a youtube account I finally opened up (I used to have one, but the way everything was going... it just kinda..shut down on me and I don't know the correct information to log in so I cant really take the videos there and redo them and make them decent.) So, I will be creating some new videos of 1.3's gameplay and relaying it to a few people I have connections with that get quite a few visitors on a regular basis, and getting him to promote the ones I have. So, if you guys have ANY good screenshots or videos that I can turn into something FANTASTIC. Please, add me on steam, upload them to mediafire or where ever, and I will do my best to get everything going.

If you guys have ANY ideas at all about what we can do to get this game revived, please do so. And I know, this may sound silly trying to get it going with 1.4 on the horizon, but honestly, that shouldnt stop us.

You know, even I feel that we're getting a few players again though it's mostly the same dedicated players.

I wish you good luck anyway, I am in agreement, US needs to have a decent server up and running again.

Actually, today we had about 5 new players join with all of us, and I am also getting a few of the players that just dropped off the face of Dystopia back in.

Are you going to be running one PUG server that is always locked, and one public server?

One step at a time.... I want to see if there is going to be traffic first through a single server, and if there isnt its going to be a waste of money and time to get both going. I will start with the basics, stripping the server of all terrible maps that no one plays, but making them available for callvote. If they get voted then fine, if they don't ever become voted.... then it really isnt that much of a loss. So, once we can get enough traffic and hold a steady server 24/7 with people in, atleast during peak times (12:00 EST and 1:00 AM EST), I will then get a second server running for distinct puging.

I would also like League to appear again, and that would be my ultimate goal.

Yes but you can't really lock up a public server for pugs, people will stop playing there.

I guess that's not a big problem since there already is a pug server, so I guess your server can be a good public server for NA.

What company is hosting the server? I believe nfoservers does a 14$ (for a year) 16 slot dys server with free 15 slot mumble.

The new server should be up and running, and I will be posting an announcement here shortly with the server name included.

Good stuff FP. I've got some gameplay vids on my channel too. I'm busy creating some map overviews for the newbies so they can get a hang of the maps sooner. Hopefully if they get watched we'll be able to retain more of the new players.

Has anyone else been having the Dys startup problem? On first load it crashes out with some (C related?) error and needs a full steam restart. The error is "dys is already running" IIRC.

I spend a lot of time on BSymph these days, but if you guys have specific times when you are generally online playing I would love to get back into Dys although expect to carry me the entire game, haha.
